Renoir
A Classic, Picturesque Film of Art & Love

“The purpose of painting is to decorate the walls. Therefore it has to be as rich as possible.”

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

“Renoir” is a “Très Bien” French film directed by Gilles Bourdos based on the last years of the great Impressionist Painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir… Set on the French Riviera in the summer of 1915, Jean Renoir -- son of Pierre-Auguste Renoir returned home to convalesce after being wounded in World War I….

Film focusing on a young woman who rejuvenated, enchanted, and inspired both father and son… telling the forgotten story of - Andrée Heuschling( also known as Catherine Hessling) who was the last model of elder Renoir in his declining health at age 74, and she later became the wife and the first actor in the films of his son, the world famous film director Jean Renoir.

So the enchanting beauty “Andrée” was a Muse to the Father, Elder Renoir; and a wife to the Son Jean Renoir, also she was the very first actress in Jean Renoir’s film… they married and departed… she was once again forgotten… but Jean turned out to be the world renowned film director.

Renoir film was shot in 2012 and released in 2013. Location shooting in the Côte d’Azur… the picturesque port of Cagnes-sur-Mer where Pierre-Auguste Renoir spent his last years at Domaine des Collettes…

Thanks to the Taiwanese cinematographer Mark Ping Bing Lee(台灣攝影師李屏賓), his absorbing skill of photographing and the touch of sensual vision…celebrated in every shot of Les Collettes’ fascinating landscape… the trees blowing in the wind… the green green grass… and the lights in the sun or in the dark….really masterpiece of artwork!!

Bravo Mark Ping Bing Lee, Taiwan is proud of YOU!!

When Andrée and Jean first meet, and she asks him what he wants to do with his life, he replies glumly that he has “no dreams and ambitions.”
She scolds, “Never say that to a woman — she’ll despise you.”

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was undoubtedly one of the most prolific artists ever with about 6000 paintings completed during the 60 years he was active as an artist despite suffering from rheumatism since his early 50s…

“I refuse to paint the world black… A painting should be something pleasant and cheerful… There are enough disagreeable things in life.
I don’t need to paint more…”

Renoir is an artist best known for his pleasant paintings and love of the female figure. He did not consider his art political or moralistic but simply a joy to create. Renoir indulged in painting and dedicated his life to it…

Renoir’s philosophy is distilled in five words: “Flesh! That’s all that matters.”

Renoirs sensual works such as The Bathers and Nude in the Sun are some of the most famous and frequently-reproduced in the history of art… he earned a huge following for his unique painting style.

“Too early, too late,” Renoir sighed that their age difference prevented them from becoming lovers…. For Renoir, 15-year-old Andrée Heuschling (Christa Théret) who has a ravenous appetite for life, is the spirit made flesh, a beauty and marvelous MUSE to him.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty, and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau." (wikipedia)

“If painting were not a pleasure to me I should certainly not do it.”

“What must control the structure is not the line,” Renoir declares. “It’s the color.”
